Windmill instalation is typically acheived using a crew
consisting of one skilled technician accomapnied by a number of
assistants, the quantity depending on the equipment available to
assist in the instalation process. For smaller windmills below
4,5 metres in diameter a period of two days is required to errect
the windmill once the tower foundations have been established.
Larger windmills may require up to two weeks to errect. Windmill
pumping plant instalation requires that the entire system be
correctly installed.

Firstly the borehole from which water is to be drawn must have
been tested to ascertain what it's sustainable yield is. The
borehole must also be straight and vertical. If this is not the
case the windmill pumprods will rub against the steel water pipes
and wear through them.

The windmill tower must be errected so that the borehole is
central to the tower base.

The windmill tower must be errected vertically so that the mast
pipe about which the windmill engine rotates to follow the wind
direction is vertical. If this is not the case the windmill will
under perform.

The windmill tower foundations must be to the windmill
manufactureres specifications. If no specifications are supplied
then the windmill should not be installed. Southern Cross
windmill towers are unconditionally guaranteed against storm
damage due to any storm provided only that the tower foundations
are to specification.

The rotation of the windmill engine to follow the wind direction
should not result in any twisting motion being imparted to the
pump rods which would result in their twisting loose.

All nuts and bolts need to be tightened and checked for
tightness.

The equipment needed for a windmill installation is of a simple
nature. Smaller windmills are can be almost entirely assembled at
ground level and be pulled up with the tower. Larger windmills
are built up from the ground. For all of the above a chain block
and tackle with a derrick pole with necessary hand tools
suffices. In major projects a 10 ton truck with a crane speeds
the process up.
